such sweet sound

So... guess what happened!!! Ok, I'd listen if I could but I'm not going to wait anymore. I finally got an iPod =D Yes, I'm happy with it now. I've seen and used em before so nothing is really "new" to me. It's a great player of course as supported by the other millions of people who own one. However, I'm still distraught at the fact that I know the battery will die eventually in about 1 year, which means bye bye iPod... Knowing this would happen, and previously deciding against the iPod because of this, I'm not quite sure why I ended up settling for it anyway. Maybe it was because that it was just such an amazing player that it would be worth it? I sure as heck hope so. Even with the student 10% discount from the UBS, this puppy was an expensive one. (i got the 20 gig one) Another thing that pushed me over was that one of my friend's had just got one, and I guess I trust his judgment so when I saw that he thought it'd be a good investment, it convinced me as well.

Now, don't think I'm just a sychophant now, buying into what the populous buys. I did a great deal of research on many players before coming to this decision. I looked at at the Dell player, Rio, iRiver's flash players, had an encounter with the Sandisk player, just about every single conceivable player on the market. I looked at em all. I don't mind saying that many had close calls for me. I thought the Rio Carbon was pretty nice, although it's design wasn't nearly as innovative as the iPod's wheel, it was cheaper than the mini (@ $200) and it stored 5 gigs compared to 4 (on the mini). I just couldn't bring myself to buy it mainly b/c a) I had never actually seen it, b) the display looked slightly smaller/cramp, and c) the ergonomics of the button design didn't look forgiving. Dell's player was a sturdy competitor, however I just didn't like the whole scroll thing in the middle of the player. Not to mention it's battery life went down with the release of the second version. Flash players are nice in that you can replace their batteries when they run out. However, with my experience with the Sandisk one, which used 1 AAA battery and lasted only about 7 hours, was not a very good one since it ended up being defective. (read my previous blog for that story) I guess I just had bad luck and maybe I should have given it a second chance. But that lame battery life was just terrible. Yes, there are other players that use 1 AA battery instead and get slightly better life; But when you think about it this way... The iPod has 20 gigs of space, that's a heck-of-a-lot of space. It's, "You could go and download a movie on campus and bring it home" big. Not to mention having to worry about purchasing batteries won't be a problem anymore. Also, the displays on flash players are very tiny and typically, you won't have a very bright backlight even with a decent sized display. Size-wise, yes they're smaller, but the latest 4th gen iPod isn't that big either. About wallet-sized and it fits almost anywhere.

All in all, I'm pretty happy having finally settled on a player. (I've been looking for quite a long time) It's a good one, but I know I will be sad when the battery eventually dies. =/(I'll just have to find a way to get a new one out of the one year warranty... hehehe...) For those who haven't experienced the iPod, I highly suggest checking it out though. It truly is a technological icon/marvel of our day.
