I, Will Smith, promise to make *fill in the blank* movies...

With his newest flick "I, Robot" that came out about last week, Will Smith is showing some rust. Don't get me wrong though, this movie may not get nearly the hype as other movies out this summer, but it does please. Sure, the whole futuristic, conspiracy thriller was done a few times, but it's a good genre that will generate good movies all the time. So here's the skinny: It's 2035 in the Windy City of Chicago and the world's producer of household robots, USR is about to release it's brand new model, the NS-5. Enter Spooner (Will Smith), a seasoned cop who doesn't trust robots the slightest bit, even if he's eating food cooked by a robot. The spark to the movie is the supposed suicide of the famed creator of the robots, Albert Lanning. Spooner, of course thinks it was the robots, and everyone else thinks he's a crack addict. Spooner gets his vintage '04 detective gear on and does some of the sherlock stuff with his inside person, the I-got-something-stuck-in-my-ass, but still attractive Dr. Calvin (who is played by Bridget Moynahan; she gets a less stuck up later). The CGI advances that movie makers have made is incredible as shown by this movie. Action is plentiful in this flick as we have another decent car scene courtesy of a futuristic Audi and two huge trucks. I'm jealous of all the nice cars that Will Smith gets to drive in his movies... the 360 in Bad Boys 2 >_< Anyway, story-wise, the movie keeps you guessing for the next bit and leads you in some different directions. Ultimately, it falls together, but with a few holes. There could be a few questions asked you can talk to me later about after seeing the movie. Will Smith plays his character fairly well although I think other people could've done the role the same. I liked his older characters that were smack-talking and reckless-abandon. In this movie, he's kind of taken up a more serious tough cop who's can't really express his paranoia for robots very well. I think a little more character development would've helped the movie. Bridget does a good job with her role but a little more development could have occured IMO. The movie is more, follow the clues in the clouds that only Spooner seems to get. That makes for a movie that leaves the audience a out of the loop. The good about that is that you don't know what's going to happen next, however I would just say that this just makes the movie the same as any other suspence/action flick. Will Smith's humor was also lacking in this movie. There were a few chuckles and laughs, but nothing near or over the top. All in all, the filming of the movie was done very well, but there are a lot of other little tidbits that are just missing to make this movie a real stunner. For a rating, I think I'll give this a 6/10. I would recommend this as matinee viewing. It'd be nice to watch in a theatre because of all the special effects, but don't plan on a being blown away by anything except for Will Smith's driving... =P
