2 new movies seen!

Today we'll take a look at the 2 following films... Moulin Rouge and Windstruck(Korean).

I had always wanted to see Moulin Rouge because I usually heard that it was either a great movie, or that they didn't like it all. Why did I want to see a movie with such mixed reactions? I didn't trust the people who said it was bad. HA! Anyway... I finally seized an opportunity to watch it at my friend's dorm room today. I must say that I found myself pretty satisfied (as well as a little dizzy from the beginning of the movie). In the early 1900's, Christian(Ewan Mcgregor) is one of those precursors to what we call today starving artists who create art in the name of freedom, truth, life, and especially love. He stumbles upon a makeshift crew of wanna-be big time actors/playwrites and they together try to make a play to get into the business at the Moulin Rouge, the most jumpin' club of the time. Here they meet Satine (Nicole Kidman) a high end performer/prostitiute who is the envy of all men at Moulin Rouge, but our crew of wanna-bes think she's their ticket to making it big. Conversely on the other end, the ring leader Harold (Jim Broadbent) and Satine are expecting Satine to impress The Duke of our French town, so that Satine can become a star actress. Yeah, I think I'm starting to convolute the plot because it becomes very, very mixed up like a bag of different colored yarn, just like the way it was filmed. CAUTION: be wary in the beginning of fast moving objects and rapid change of colors. I found the film was shot extremely well and visually it was actually a nice change of scenary. Ok, so as I got sidetracked, I think I'll just leave the rest of the plot up for you to see because I know how interesting it must sound now. (I really don't do some good movies justice; especially when I'm half-awake at 2am) The acting was superb as to be expected from academy award winners such as Ewan Mcgregor and Nicole Kidman. Their love can be felt off the screen and the ending scene is very touching. The only rip I had with this movie, and it might be more major for other people but for me I eventually got used to it and disregarded it; anyway, the use of pop music throughout the movie kinda threw me off as well as the mood of the movie I had originally expected after the introduction. The use of some lyrics was good and the singing throughout the movie was great, but the few songs just thrown in just didn't feel right. If you can put that aside though, (it can get rather annoying but it goes away late in the movie) then this film is a great watch. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves romances and musicals. I'm sure there are hardcore Ewan Mcgregor fans who have already watched it, purely because he was in the movie.

Moving onto Windstruck, the supposed prequel that came after the hit movie My Sassy Girl. I say supposed because the end of the movie, which is supposed to serve as the platform (no pun intended) that leads into My Sassy Girl seems like it was written into the script when the director finished directing the rest of the movie and then realized "Crap, this is a prequel to My Sassy Girl isn't it?" The movie starts off as we meet both characters Gyeong-jin (the girl that's played by the same girl from My Sassy Girl) and Myung-woo in a thief chase on foot. Gyeong-jin is a firey cop (pretty much same character from before) who just seems to be going through life reckless abandon. Myung-woo is a softspoken HS physics teacher who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and as fate would have it, these two just kinda were brought together. The first half was enjoyable, but in the second half... I started getting a little confused and taken away from the movie. Meaning I started not liking it... random people died at random times, people started going crazy, and things that are supposed to connect with My Sassy Girl, don't. It's not all bad though, the characters were superb in their roles and many scenes were very well played out. Unfortunately, the sum of the parts did not add up to a good movie. My Sassy Girl focused a lot on how love could be found in the least expected places and sometimes fate has a funny way of working out a certain way. This movie seemed to tell more about how love sometimes hurts and how hope can be found even after love is lost (in albeit strange ways...). I'm pretty sure this movie was simply a ploy to make money off the huge fanbase that came from My Sassy Girl. Anyway, I'd recommend this movie for anyone who's a fan of the actress, which I was and why I saw the movie, but I'm not sure if I'd recommend this movie to the people who wanted to see a prequel to My Sassy Girl... Doing so would ruin the goodness that came from My Sassy Girl. This movie does work find as a stand alone, so you don't have to see My Sassy Girl. Although I would only recommend seeing My Sassy Girl instead. I think I've used My Sassy Girl in this paragraph more than like 3x the times I've mentioned Windstruck in the entire blog... Yea, tells you something doesn't it?
