*sigh* break's almost over again

Having had my finals on Tues, Wed, and Thur, my break felt very delayed =/ And now there are only 3 days left. Not to mention I have to work on probably 2 of the days... Well, onto some more interesting things than my complaints, I just came back from a family trip to Cancun. Fancy eh? not so much when you're with your family... u_u; Don't get me wrong though, it still had some good parts. Snorkeling, sunbathing, and the massive amounts of food to eat were probably the high points. Going to a nightclub with your dad and sister, getting sick b/c of reasons I'll point out later, and sight seeing were the low points.

If anyone ever does go to Cancun, I highly recommend the nighclub called "Coco Bongo". It's definately a very happening place that is a must see on any Spring Break vacation. Note: remember to leave the family members at home when you do though. My dad had thought that it was some night-time show like the ones in Vegas. Little did he realize that we were very far from Vegas and going into the club was supposed to be 18+ and the hotel guide taking us there had actually said "yeah we will sneak your daughter in, heh heh..." Damn unethical bastards. Only trying to make our money. In a turn of events however, eventually my dad did leave with my sister early, leaving me with my two cousins and a random "uncle" (chinese kind, where they have no relation) in the club. Got a few more drinks and cruised through the dance floor until that uncle told us it was time to leave... *sigh* and the Michael Jackson show had just started! o_O (good timing on his part)

My parents have a timeshare in Mazatlan and they just opted to move it here. We got an "all-inclusive" kind of plan that allowed us to eat as much as we wanted from their buffet. Man did I eat a lot... Unfortunately I didn't gain any weight b/c I got sick and ended up in bed for about 2 days, not eating anything except crackers... (yeah, it's unfortunate b/c I'm currently trying to gain weight >_<) The food is pretty good, although it's all smothered in butter. You'd probably have to try it to believe me that everything there tastes like butter. This could have attributed to my getting sick, since I'm usually eating very healthy at home. And moving on to my getting sick, (don't worry I'm all better now) another potential cause was my drinking more than I could handle, thus, alcohol poisoning. Yeah, I was downing the margaritas, tequila sunrises, pino coladas, strawberry daquires, and flaming coffees like there was no tomorrow. (which is true) And I guess I just have really low tolerance since I never drink normally. This is probably the major cause of my illness. Sucks to be me.

Saw the Chichen Itza, that popular temple/pyramid building that you see when you think of the Yucatan Penninsula. Climbed up the 91 very steep steps and down twice. Got very burned in the process. If you're into the history and sight seeing, this is a good place to spend a half a day.

While I was sick, I did see a good amount of movies. These include You've got Mail, T3, Cradle to the Grave, Elf, Shall We Dance (japanese version, w/o subtitles nor dubbing, yeah!) and Matrix Reloaded. Since I've seen all of them twice except for You've Got Mail, I'll just give a quick review of that one as this blog is starting to bore even me. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan team up for one of their most popular romantic comedies and in my opinion one of the better American produced ones. I dunno how to explain it, but aside from on screen chemistry issues between the characters, there's something else that I can't put my finger on that really distinguishes a quality romantic comedy out of the rest. My Sassy Girl had it, and so does this movie. Tom Hanks plays a business tycoon taking the industry by storm by making superstores such as the book megastore he builds in this movie. Meg Ryan plays a small business owner whose "Shop Around The Corner" is right across the street from Tom Hanks' newly opened book superstore. Naturally, a conflict of "non-personal" interests occurs between the two and it becomes a full out battle between David and Goliath. Amidst this, the two are actually anonymous email buddies who have fallen for each other without even knowing anything about each other, other than their screen names. What a coincidence. =P If only life were really this peachy. Turns out, the two point their business differences behind them and actually fall in love. Crazy, I know, so watch the movie. Even now, I'm kinda having second thoughts about this part of the movie. Everything else about it though, is very well played out as seasoned actors/actresses Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan won't let us down. Most of the time. I'll rate this about a 7.5/10. I guessed how the movie was going to end before the last scene started. =D I feel proud of that, lol. Ok I'm done, time for grub.

such sweet sound

So... guess what happened!!! Ok, I'd listen if I could but I'm not going to wait anymore. I finally got an iPod =D Yes, I'm happy with it now. I've seen and used em before so nothing is really "new" to me. It's a great player of course as supported by the other millions of people who own one. However, I'm still distraught at the fact that I know the battery will die eventually in about 1 year, which means bye bye iPod... Knowing this would happen, and previously deciding against the iPod because of this, I'm not quite sure why I ended up settling for it anyway. Maybe it was because that it was just such an amazing player that it would be worth it? I sure as heck hope so. Even with the student 10% discount from the UBS, this puppy was an expensive one. (i got the 20 gig one) Another thing that pushed me over was that one of my friend's had just got one, and I guess I trust his judgment so when I saw that he thought it'd be a good investment, it convinced me as well.

Now, don't think I'm just a sychophant now, buying into what the populous buys. I did a great deal of research on many players before coming to this decision. I looked at at the Dell player, Rio, iRiver's flash players, had an encounter with the Sandisk player, just about every single conceivable player on the market. I looked at em all. I don't mind saying that many had close calls for me. I thought the Rio Carbon was pretty nice, although it's design wasn't nearly as innovative as the iPod's wheel, it was cheaper than the mini (@ $200) and it stored 5 gigs compared to 4 (on the mini). I just couldn't bring myself to buy it mainly b/c a) I had never actually seen it, b) the display looked slightly smaller/cramp, and c) the ergonomics of the button design didn't look forgiving. Dell's player was a sturdy competitor, however I just didn't like the whole scroll thing in the middle of the player. Not to mention it's battery life went down with the release of the second version. Flash players are nice in that you can replace their batteries when they run out. However, with my experience with the Sandisk one, which used 1 AAA battery and lasted only about 7 hours, was not a very good one since it ended up being defective. (read my previous blog for that story) I guess I just had bad luck and maybe I should have given it a second chance. But that lame battery life was just terrible. Yes, there are other players that use 1 AA battery instead and get slightly better life; But when you think about it this way... The iPod has 20 gigs of space, that's a heck-of-a-lot of space. It's, "You could go and download a movie on campus and bring it home" big. Not to mention having to worry about purchasing batteries won't be a problem anymore. Also, the displays on flash players are very tiny and typically, you won't have a very bright backlight even with a decent sized display. Size-wise, yes they're smaller, but the latest 4th gen iPod isn't that big either. About wallet-sized and it fits almost anywhere.

All in all, I'm pretty happy having finally settled on a player. (I've been looking for quite a long time) It's a good one, but I know I will be sad when the battery eventually dies. =/(I'll just have to find a way to get a new one out of the one year warranty... hehehe...) For those who haven't experienced the iPod, I highly suggest checking it out though. It truly is a technological icon/marvel of our day.
